‘At some point maybe there needs to be a formal deprogramming of the cult members.’

That’s Hillary Clinton on how supporters of Donald Trump should consider breaking ties with the former president, who’s now the top Republican 2024 contender.

Speaking with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour, Clinton, the former secretary of state and 2016 Democratic presidential candidate, expressed concern that Trump’s followers stay loyal to him no matter what — just like cult followers.

“And sadly, so many of those extremists, those MAGA extremists, take their marching orders from Donald Trump, who has no credibility left by any measure. He’s only in it for himself,” Clinton said.

CNN described Clinton’s remarks as “some of her harshest comments against Trump.” The full interview is set to air Monday.

Clinton said she believes Trump will secure the Republican nomination in any case. But she also believes that President Joe Biden can win re-election — and she said the contest between the two men couldn’t be any more significant.

“One [Trump] will wreck our democracy. One violates the law on a regular basis. One appeals to the worst in our collective psyche. The other [Biden] gets things done. Why is that a hard choice?” Clinton said.

As for the recent ouster of House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), Clinton said it shows the upheaval in the Republican party’s ranks in the worst way.

The GOP is dealing with “an absolute hostage situation with its most extreme members,” Clinton said. She added that McCarthy was “not continuing to be captive to the far-right extremists. So they toppled him. It was a very small number as you look at the vote. But now we’re reaping the consequences of their misbehavior.”
