Jobless claims match 3-month high as Trump White House readies more federal job cuts

The number of people who applied for unemployment benefits last week matched a three-month high, possibly reflecting the first wave of what’s likely to be a flood of laid-off federal employees and private contractors filing new claims.

New jobless claims jumped by 22,000 to 242,000 in the seven days that ended Feb. 22,

the government said, up from 220,000 in the prior week.
